athletic shoes1.Remove the laces from the shoes. Remove any inserts or loose padding in the bottom of the shoes.
2.Prewash the shoes by scrubbing with the liquid dishwasher soap and a stiff scrub brush. I have also used the white micro cleaner pads that are now available in the cleaning section of discount stores. These work well on the smooth part of the leather, but for fabric shoes and for getting into the tread and seams, the scrub brush works better.
3.Open the shoes as far as they can be opened with the tongue out and place them upside down in the dishwasher rack. You can wash many pair at once. I wash them on a sanitizing cycle without additional soap in the dishwasher.
4.When the shoes are done washing....I dont leave them on the hot drying cycle....I set them outdoors in the shade to dry. I have also set them over the forced air registers of the furnace or air conditioner in damp weather. It will take a while to dry....depending on how much padding inside, fabric vs leather, etc.
5.I wash the laces and inserts, pads, etc which were previously removed from the shoes in the same load of the dishwasher. First scrub them with the dishwasher detergent. You can use a little bleach to brighten and disinfect them, but make sure that you rinse the bleach out before washing the load so that the bleach doesn't get on your colored shoes. Tie the laces to the upper rack or place them in an old nylon stocking tied to the rack so that the laces don't get tangled.

athletic shoes1.Prepare a solution of water and a neutral cleaner (such as liquid dish-washing detergent or another mild product.
2.Remove laces and inserts and rinse the shoes with water inside and out.
3.Use a soft brush and the cleaning solution to scrub every part of both shoes, including liners and insoles.
4.Remove scuff marks with a white nylon-backed scrub pad.
5.Rinse the shoes thoroughly with water.
6.Stuff the shoes with paper (not newspaper'the ink will run and make a mess) to absorb excess water and to help the shoes keep their shape. Allow them to drip-dry.
7.Wash the laces in a load of laundry. Allow the inserts to air out, and apply baking soda to them if they're smelly.
8.Replace the inserts and laces after the shoes dry completely.
9.Apply white cream shoe polish to white leather parts and black polish to black leather parts.

The Man Who Invented Modern Athletic Shoes Inadvertently Revolutionized Commerce and Sports

I grew up in the 1950's playing basketball hour after hour on city playgrounds. The public courts of the day were nothing like those found today in most American towns. There were no lights, a steel, kidney-shaped backboard (ugh!) with bent rims, occasionally a steel chain net and no lines painted to properly delineate the free throw line and out of bounds. The surface was often rough and cracked. You had to know where the ball would give a true bounce and where you could lose control because of the uneven surface. But we played on for endless hours in all weather. The worst nights were when there was no moon to play by. We had to quit play early on those nights. Every Christmas I would find a new Voit basketball under the tree. It was a glorious site, sparkling, hard, looking just like a ball you would see the pros play with on television. ..
